The Consolation of Philosophy

• Philosophical refl ection can comfort people in distress.
• Human life is not random.
• Rather, God orders the universe.
• Happiness doesn’t come from material wealth, bodily pleasure, social rank or fame.
• It comes from self-mastery and self-knowledge.
• All people want happiness, though they often pursue it in the wrong way.
• God is the source of all good things.
• Bad deeds make people miserable.
• Seek the mean in all things: Don’t let yourself get too high or too low.
• God has knowledge of the future, yet man still has free will.
